One of my biggest challenges with ADHD is the long-term loss of focus. If there was a pill that could turn that initial hyperfocus into sustained attention, people with ADHD could literally run the world, it would feel like the movie limitless.
I love the intense interest I can have in topics; when Iām engaged, I often surpass my peers. However, my enthusiasm usually fades after a while, and they catch up and eventually surpass me.
But over time Iāve sort created a strategy that works for me, particularly with my hobbies: music and content creation. Iāve stayed consistent for four years in both.
I produce beats in FL Studio but often hit phases where my motivation drops. When a new sound captures my interest, it reignites my focus and helps me improve which is nice but I will again inevitably lose interest.
During these low points, I shift to content creation. I enjoy editing clips and content for my partnerās social media , allowing me to express my creativity while enhancing my editing skills.
When I lose interest in anything I usually enter āfind a new interestā mode, which I will usually harness into previous passions and develop those skills further, creating a cycle of improvement over time. And as a bonus improve in each passion, I notice my interest stays longer, allowing me to stick to something for even longer than the last time. As my skills improve obstacles become less daunting so I stay motivated longer.
Since our brains thrive on variety, I recommend pursuing multiple related interests. For example, if you like working out, consider creating content around it. If youāre into cooking explore something like baking, Iām sure you can connect the dots on adjacent interests.
I know this isnt as helpful for something that requires sustained effort like a job or school but hope this helps someone excel in their personal goals and passion.
