I've seen a few things recently suggesting that it's 'all' women who are being diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood, and blaming it on the patriarchy. Stuff like 'ADHD presents differently in girls and the medical establishment wasn't interested in women, which is why they were missed; now it's their time!' I certainly don't want to take away from any feminist victory moments, but as a late-diagnosed male with mixed but primarily inattentive presentation, I can't help but feel this is a little inaccurate/misleading. I exist, too! The medical establishment certainly has plenty to answer for with its historical treatment of women and girls, but I wonder how much of this rhetoric is based on outdated information?
Does anyone know what the male/female ratios are like for adult diagnosis? Or what the ratios of hyperactive/mixed/inattentive types are for males & females?
