My son (turns 9 this weekend) is the poster boy for ADHD. The boy is just go go go all the time, incredibly loving but with a very short fuse, always blurting out something, impulsive, etc. We have been trying medications since summer of 2023 and finally got the all clear to try stimulants. He started 2.5 mg 2x day of Ritalin last week and OMG it has been awful!!! He is a sloth all morning, then gets his second dose and turns into a rage machine. He’s a total angry maniac until bedtime, rinse and repeat. Even without the second dose, he’s still angry the moment the sedative effect wears off.
For context, dad and I have ADHD as well and both respond well to Adderall XR. The moment I was finally diagnosed and medicated was a huge wow moment for me. It was life changing and I could not believe I was going through life unmedicated for so long. I was really hoping our son would have a similar experience, but it’s been downright awful so far.
I have an appointment with his psych in the morning and absolutely will not be continuing Ritalin. I am interested in seeing if he responds better to Adderall. Has anyone/their kid had a similar response to one stimulant but did okay on another? The non-stimulant options help a tad (clonidine and an SSRI), but he still struggles every day. School, friends, life, it’s all hard for him. We desperately want to find the right fit for him.
And yes, we avoid food dyes, encourage high protein (he has serious food aversions so working around that is difficult), he’s in therapy, meets with the school counselor, has a 504 plan, etc. I am purely seeking experience with meds and stimulant-induced rage.
