I’d been out of work for nearly 3 months and finally got a job that was advertised as rough in plumbing (this is what I do, and I am reasonably good at it).
After the first week the scope of work shifts from the scope of work that was advertised (and I have a lot of practice in doing) to work that I haven’t done a lot of. Had lots of talks with my boss about adhd and how it affects me, I figure it’s easier to be up front and share where I struggle so I can (ideally) have a boss that can support me.
Cue adhd frenzied panic for the next 3 weeks while I’m sent off to figure out how to remodel houses after only building mid rise apartments and doing commercial spaces.
Long story short, boss called and let me go a few hours ago. Too slow! Also managed to tell me he didn’t think I was a very good plumber. Something I’ve not heard from any of my employers. Ever.
I know that I would have been able to figure it out in the next few weeks. I thought I’d found a compassionate boss but it turns out he’s just another meathead chasing dollars.
If you’ve read this far here’s a fun bit. In his condescension about my work I remembered today when he spent 2 hours cutting a pipe in place. He used 2 different grinders (complete with head in joist bay getting sparks flung at him grinding galvanized steel with no earplugs), a large sawzall, and spent an hour driving to and from Home Depot to buy a new tool that would fit into the space.
The pipe is threaded together. The fucking meathead could have just unthreaded the piece, cut it on the ground, and re threaded it.
TLDR adhd frenzied mind state cost me a job but in the long run it’s for the best cause working for that guy suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks (cause he sucks).
