How do you compensate for reduced working memory?

In a day-to-day sense, what are things you can to minimize the negative effects of impaired working memory in day-to-day life? For example, in videogames and in real life, I have a tendency to get lost without something to guide me to whenver I need to go every step of the way. I compensate using google maps and writing things down. Are there other examples of stuff like this?
