I see a lot of ADHD posts here that go in the sense of some essentialization of ADHD people, as if "we" were an homogenous category of humans.
I dunno how this post will be received but I personally can't bear this way of thinking. Would people do the same if we were in a diabetic sub, or a sub for deaf people? I doubt it.
ADHD, despite becoming more and more understood is a characteristic we share, but even then there are different types of ADHD / ADD.
Knowing how our brain might work and what to do with it is an very important relief and can be incredibly helping, especially because most of us craved an explanation and empathy.
But that said, let's not forget that it's a part of who we are, but not more than our nationality, gender, skin color, dreams etc. etc.
It's a tricky thing to find a balance between explanation and excuse, as much as it is tempting to self identify with our disorder, but please don't do that.
"We" aren't the best or the worst at things. We have specificities that might help or harm us in certain task. But these specificities don't define us. We just need to find our way around or how to work with these.
Thanks.
