How did an impulse positively change your life?
Post Body

-I’d love to read your positive impulses too! Feel free to comment them. :)

I (19M) used to be terrified of hyperfixating on projects that I knew would last more than a few days, a week at most. The fear of investing a decent portion of my time and money into something just to lose interest and either throw it all away, or more likely leave it unfinished sitting somewhere to taunt me, always persuaded me to avoid things and scenarios that could lead me to such a project.

I also never had a big interest in cars until I threw all caution out the window and impulsively bought a 35 year old Japanese car. After buying the car (with money I had to borrow from a friend) I started to think about cars more often; at first because of the dopamine, but slowly I discovered that I have a strong desire towards not just Japanese drift cars, but also the feeling of pride I get whenever I work on it myself and fix something. (Keep in mind I had next to no mechanical knowledge of engines before purchasing this car.)

At the point of posting this I’ve taken a 35 year old Nissan that hadn’t been driven in 12 years from a rust covered farmland paddock decoration, to a well running, cleaned and polished meet-worthy car. All the while making new friends and becoming part of a community, which in turn has helped me feel more accepted and purposeful. All because of an impulse that I didn’t turn down from fear.

All this to say sometimes you should trust in and follow your impulses, you’ll never know what might become of it.

P.S. Cars are expensive be wiser than me if the impulse you’re considering is this expensive and lengthy as if you don’t get as lucky as I did and click with it, it will hurt, almost physically.
