Ok, first of all, I am brand spanking new to this sub, so apologies if this question has been covered before.
Basically, I just set up a consultation with a psychiatrist to be evaluated for ADHD later this month. When I called, the receptionist immediately informed me that this psychiatrist does not prescribe any stimulants for ADHD and asked if that would be an issue.
So far, most of my thought and research has been about a possible diagnosis (just the “do I have it or not?”), and I hadn’t really looked ahead at what the next steps would be, trusting that a psychiatrist would be able to prescribe whatever would fit me best (assuming I do receive a positive diagnosis).
After the phone call, though, I started wondering, “Should it be an issue if this psychiatrist won’t prescribe any stimulant medications?” And, uh, yeah, that’s basically the question. Would that be an issue for you? Should I find someone else?
My general feeling is that I would probably prefer to feel that all the typical treatment options have been considered — so that I can believe that whatever I end up getting prescribed is the best option for me from among those.
Or is this pretty typical?
What do you guys think?
