Few reminders for the test this weekend!
Post Body

Hey folks. Just a few reminders for you.

  1. Go to bed by midnight or earlier tonight and by 11 at the latest tomorrow. Sleep is strongly correlated with test scores, and adolescents (in a perfect and sadly unattainable world) need around 9.5 hours of sleep for optimal brain function. Make sure you get at least 8 hours of sleep both tonight and tomorrow night - your score depends on it.
  2. Consider what you will do in the break between the Math and Reading sections. Some people stretch, other people meditate, but regardless of what you choose, your goal is to be focused and calm for the beginning of the reading section. Don't waste your break time by talking to friends - that isn't conducive to a focused mind. Some of my best students have used visualization during the break and found it to be extremely effective.
  3. Make sure you dress in layers and have everything ready to go the night before. Don't do a last minute scramble on Saturday morning - you might end up like my student Maxwell, who forgot his test ID and had to retake a month later. He did get a 35 but don't put yourself in that position!
  4. Identify how you want to mentally frame your test. Some students thrive off of pressure and LIKE to think it's a high stakes test. In my experience, students tend to perform better if they mentally frame the test as a personal challenge. Pick some way to think about the test that is positive and productive. This can go a long way towards calming test nerves.
  5. If something goes wrong during the test, don't let it tilt you. I had a student who was routinely scoring 34's and 35's during practice have a lot of trouble at the end of the Math section on the February 2018 ACT. She stalled out on question 57 and had to randomly guess on a few questions - very uncharacteristic for her. This caused her to have a terrible mindset for the last two sections and scored well below her averages on both - 31 and 27. The only question that matters is the question you are working on. If you allow past mistakes or challenges affect you, your problems will snowball. Worry about missed questions after you finish the essay.
  6. Remember that no matter what your score is, there are great colleges out there for you. If you don't hit your target it's not the end of the world.

Good luck and make sure to upvote for that thicc 36.
