ABDL before the Internet?

As someone who was born in the late 90s; which was after the World Wide Web was launched, I sometimes wonder what it was like to be ABDL before the Internet became a thing. I imagine it would have been very lonely, for one thing. Being ABDL is lonely even WITH the Internet, so I can’t imagine what it must have been like before. An ABDL before the Internet probably would have thought they were the only one.
Can some of the older members shed some light on what being ABDL was like before the Internet?
