Firmer Oatmeal Messes
Post Body

I wanted to share my recent experiments with oatmeal.

When I first tried oatmeal in my diaper it was a good experience, but it didn't feel like a real mess to me since it had a tendency to fall apart and spread around.

That's when I decided to try adding cornstarch-based baby powder to it. Cornstarch is used in the cooking world to thicken soups and such. A mixture (slurry) of water and cornstarch, heated to boiling, will create a thick gel or firm jello consistency, depending on the ratio.

So I mixed about 1-1/2 cups of oatmeal to approximately 3 tablespoons* of cornstarch-based powder (yes that's a lot).

I added enough water to wet everything (not soupy**, though), stirred, and microwaved for a couple minutes. When done the oatmeal should be cooked and there should be no water left.

The oatmeal should also be steaming considerably, otherwise it may not have reached boiling point. The cornstarch won't gel unless it's hit close to boiling point.

The result is a firm oatmeal "mess" that sticks well together. Can be molded to ideal shape, then inserted into diaper. Unlike it's stinky counterpart, this "load" smells like baby powder.

*Somewhere around 3 tablespoons of total cornstarch is needed, but it might be better to use less baby powder here. The smell was good but bordering on too strong for my liking.

**More water can always be added later, but adding too much in the beginning will make it difficult to remove after.
