Zone of Interest IR shots

I’m curious if anyone can help shed a little light on the infrared shots for Zone of Interest. I may have misinterpreted parts of it but I couldn’t tell if it was actually happening and that there was someone leaving food out for people or if it was just a surreal overlay to go along children’s story that hoss was reading to his kids.
Would love to hear anyone’s opinion or take on these scenes in specific but also the film in general.
