For context: I absolutely LOVE this movie. I saw it in IMAX for an early access viewing with a friend, and he and I ended up watching it theatrically 8 times together. I also worked at a movie theatre while this was out so we had access to a large screen and the ability to pause and rewind the movie far before most other people. Needless to say he and I have torn this film apart and left no stone unturned. We absolutely love this movie, and it is now one of my top 5 favorite films. Ever. After viewing it this morning directly after the digital release it started to hit me. What follows is what I believe is the hidden story of Beau Is Afraid:
Beau moves to Mona’s new housing project for recovering addicts (he’s starting to get clean the longer he stays away from his mother) she wants to visit with him for 1) his dads death anniversary and 2) because he says he’s been clean. Beau gets nervous about visiting with his mother so he relapses and has his therapist write him a script for new COOL drugs. Before giving Beau the drugs the therapist even warns Beau that the last time he saw his mom there were issues (perhaps another previous relapse?)… Beau wakes up the next morning makes up the story about losing his keys because he doesn’t want to face his mom because he’s GUILTY of buying drugs again. After calling Mona he gets so nervous that he takes MORE pills and gets high as a kite and falls into his old ways with his old friends who… DESTROY HIS APARTMENT after forcing their way back into his life….. when he wakes up the next morning sober, he thinks he’ll be able to just wake up buy a plane ticket and go home to visit mom, but that’s when Mona’s game starts.
She knows he’s been using so she fakes her death to see if this will finally make him drop the drugs. Beau decided to end his life in the tub, however he is thwarted by his junkie friend (perhaps trying to come steal more of beaus cool drugs?) making Beau freak out and get ARRESTED. Because of this, Mona hires grace and Roger to bring Beau back to their private rehab center, while their beau meets the other patients (Toni and Jeeves maybe even nathan?) who all believe they’re part of a family for real. Beau wants to get clean, but Toni forces him to get high causing him to relapse AGAIN and causing him to start doing drugs secretly with her in the house. It gets to huffing paint, but Toni OD’s and Beau is responsible for her death causing grace and Jeeves to turn on him, and Beau running away
Beau runs away to find a village of people who are all sober who show him what his life could be like without drugs, but as he’s going through withdrawal he’s offered a liquid from the pregnant woman (which perhaps is drugs?) because as soon as he takes it shit from his past (Jeeves chasing him for murdering Toni)comes back and everything gets fucked up again. He passes out and wakes up sober enough to make it to his mothers “funeral”
He gets there and most of what happens next is real, all the way up to the reveal of his mom faking everything, doing it to see if Beau would actually quit getting high but at every opportunity he made sure to get high again causing mona to finally give up on him admitting that she had been controlling everything in his life to keep him safe, and even worked with his therapist to make sure he was on the straight and narrow.
Beau has a psychotic break from learning all of this causing him to have the hallucinations about his father and brother in the addict and ultimately making him angry enough to kill his mother for keeping all that information from him. After killing Mona he decided he’s going to drown himself in the lake, and the trial was metaphorical to see if he was going to join heaven with his mother (who was literally sitting in a SKY BOX at the trial above him) or get sucked into the deep murky depths of hell….
There are TONS of small details and evidence I’m sure I missed that support my theory, it’s a little sloppy because I was typing it as I was piecing it together, and I just had to get it out there. Let me know what you think! I’d be happy to discuss with anyone else!
