I'd never thought about it before, but there must have been people trapped in the elevators the whole time.

When the plane hit the north tower, it probably cut off the power down the elevator shafts.
There is a report of one car of people managing to get out but there must have others just stuck in other elevators. It was 8:46. Rush hour for people arriving for work.
Until the Tower came down. Jesus. That day was just horror piled on horror.
