I'm relatively new to the show and have been working my way through Before the 90 Days during quarantine. I just finished season two, and Darcey/Jesse are (finally) done.
It was unreal how quickly Jesse's behavior went downhill throughout the course of their relationship, and while Darcey is definitely not blameless, Jesse just seems deeply broken. One thing that stood out to me throughout their on-again-off-again drama is how they both seem completely incapable of being sincere with each other, especially when they're hurting. How simple would it be to say, "This sucks and I'm sad"?? Instead, they each lash out at each other in horrible ways, trying in vain to act like the argument doesn't bother them, when it CLEARLY does. (Why else would you go back to each other after twenty minutes?)
Jesse does that insufferable "no worries" thing after insulting Darcey ("No, you don't know what any of these buildings are, no worries") and Darcey just puts a wall up. She also doesn't seem to have the vocabulary to describe Jesse's behavior, so instead she just says vague things like "I want love."
Is this lack of authenticity just for the cameras, or do you think they're both really like this all the time? Until they learn how to be real with other people, they're destined for a lifetime of doomed relationships.
