I’ve said this in a few comments but I feel like it deserves its own post
Mary's diminishing attraction to Branden is evident in her expressions. She initially believed the stereotype that white Americans are wealthy (as many Filipinos do), perceiving Branden as someone who could be considered rich in the Philippines due to his financial support, even working two jobs to help her build a house
And for a while, it was true Branden worked two jobs to support her financially enough to build a house. She was living the first part of her dream and nothing could tell her otherwise.
Once Branden gets to the Philippines, this is where the dream starts to fall apart.
However, when Branden arrives in the Philippines with just $200 and suggests seeking her grandparents' help, Mary experiences a near panic attack. This is likely because she had portrayed Branden as her ticket out of poverty to her friends and family. This is exactly why she got so upset immediately.
Then, the poorly executed botched marriage proposal. She looks at him in disgust. Because he’s standing there, looking equally as poor as she, except white.
She starts to breakdown in front of producers, saying that yes she intends to marry him but the proposal didn’t align with her grand expectations influenced by western media that she had always dreamt about.
Instead, it was in the pantry while she was stressing about money, just as she had before she met him.
Lastly, they showed her suggesting that he go back home. Why? Because she’d much rather him go back to working two jobs to send her money than dealing with the idiot and having no money.
