Carrying Gas Safely

From PNW where it's usually a cool 80 degrees in the summer. Some friends are headed into the 100s and will be carrying extra gas canisters. What's the safest way to do so outside the vehicle in those extreme temperatures? Any worry about heat causing vapor build up?
