Upgrade from a C8 OLED (2018)

Post Body

Hi everyone,

I have recently noticed that my almost 5 years old 55 inch LG C8 has permanent burn in on the center of the screen (XPLAY app play symbol generated by a white play logo) and on the bottom left (Rocket League "Ball Cam" writing generated by the writing in bright red). It is only noticeable in very rare occasions when the color is just right so, while not really an issue I could not leave with, I think it's time to start looking for a new TV and maybe retire this on in the bedroom.

I will start by saying that I am not looking to go for a larger size. I am fine with 55 inch. The TV will be connected to a Denon AVRX1500H AV Receiver (5 channels; no subwoofer).

Main usage will be watching TV shows and movies via my Plex local server running on my computer (mostly 4K .mkv files), but also a lot of YouTube, Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Prime Video, etc. On top of this, it will be used for playing videogames on a PS5, Xbox Series X and occasionally Nintendo Switch. We very rarely watch live TV. It will be an exception when parents visit but, if they visit for 2 weeks, live TV will be king those 2 weeks.

Frequency of use: 4-6 hours per day on week days and definitely more on weekends.

Budget: 1500 Euro (we live in Germany).

I initially considered buying the new LG G3 (2800 EURO), the 5 years warranty on the OLED panel being very attractive, especially given the recent burn in discovery after less than 5 years on my LG C8. For the same reason, and keeping in mind the recent RTINGS.com longevity test results, I will not go for a QD-OLED either. This being said, I am rethinking my strategy a bit and, as long as I will nevertheless see an upgrade from my C8, I would rather pay half the price of an LG G3, or even less, and replace the TV again in a few years if necessary.

My potential picks are:

Sony A80J - 1100 EURO (~1195 USD)

Sony A80K - 1400 EURO (~1520 USD)

LG C2 - 1400 EURO (~1520 USD)

It is still unclear to me if any of the above will passthrough DTS sound from an internal PLEX app to the receiver via eARC but that would be great. Other than that, as long as I will have a better experience and I will notice an image upgrade from my 2018 LG C8, I would also be OK with the Sony A80J. Gaming should in theory also be better on all 3 because of the 4K 120Hz capabilities. One very important aspect for me is to not see a downgrade in brightness so I would appreciate your inputs and suggestions here. Lastly, while I am used to the LG WebOS now and it is a user friendly experience, I found it quite difficult at time changing regions just to get an app that is not available in Germany. It would be much easier on Google TV.

Of course, if you have any other suggestion, I'll gladly hear them.

Thank you.

EDIT: After thinking about it, I decided to actually go for an LG G2 an Nvidia Shield TV PRO for PLEX. I believe that's the best overall choice.

Price wise, I'm still there more or less. I found a good offer for the G2 at 1400 EURO.

Thank you for your inputs on this. It helped.
