My friend needed a new 4runner to replace his rusty blue one. Found this one that had a 3.4 swap but done very poorly. The body and frame aren't rusty and redoing the swap was in our realm of capability. It was stock other than the motor swap and a hockey puck body lift. He swapped the bumper, wheels, and spare front fenders onto it within a day. I helped make the rear fender arches out of some material we found in a truck store and some riv nuts into the existing holes.
A group of 3 of us met every Friday over the fall/winter. We pulled the motor, redid all the bad work the previous owner did, and used quality parts along the way. Key things were a proper clutch, remaking the crossover pipe and exhaust, repairing the melted engine/trans harness, and redoing the fuel lines. We also stripped his old truck and sold off a bunch of parts to fund the project at the same time.
After the truck was running again I found some old paint from a gambler 500 project and we did the classic Ivan Ironman Stuart paint job from the old rally days.
That looks really cool.
