I realize we would need a lot of luck for this to play out, but it is entirely possible and I believe it would set the foundation for the Shanahan/Lynch era. Let me know what you think.
Round 1 Pick 16 Ok this starts off a bit tricky, we trade our 2nd over all pick to Carolina for their 1st and 2 2nd round picks then we trade that pick (number 8 overall) to Baltimore for their 1st 2nd and swap our compensatory 4th for their 4th round pick. After all that trading we pick Corey Davis WR and he becomes our number 1 wide receiver of the future. It has been well documented that he runs great routs and is an animal in the redzone. I think he is immediately our number 2 and learns the nuances of the game behind Garcon.
Round 2 Pick 2 Kevon King CB, not much imagination here, he is a tall corner with great change of direction ability. I think he could start year one and evolve into a great corner, especially since we are expected to heavily value tall long corners in our new scheme.
Round 2 Pick 8 Jordan Willis DE, there is a lot of talk that after such an impressive combine he could go in the first round. I see that as entirely possible, but this is still 40th overall and does not require much of a slide to attain his talents. I think Willis could immediately be the backup LEO and primary nickel rusher, with the upside of beating out Lynch and starting from day 1. He is good in the run game, explosive off the edge, and displays quality hand usage.
Round 2 Pick 16 Tyus Bowser OLB, this is probably my favorite player in the draft. I see him playing SAM linebacker in our new scheme and playing it at a very high level. He has the athleticism to cover tight ends, running Backs, and even some receivers all while being a stout run defender and a plus pass rusher. I see him starting in base immediately and come in as a pass rusher/cover guy in some packages.
Round 2 Pick 32 Marcus Maye FS, I think Jimmy Ward will be our starting free safety this season. That being said I want there to be a fierce competition for that spot and a quality player backing him up because Jimmy has had injury issues thus far in his career. Marcus Maye is a smart athletic safety who could play both spots in a pinch, but I believe fits best playing as a single high. He is a solid tackler with the range to cover the deep center and limit defensive mistakes.
Round 3 Pick 2 Dan Feeny G, this is an athletic guard who paved the way for both Jordan Howard and Tevin Coleman during his time at Indiana. He fits the mold of a quality zone blocking lineman and held up very well in pass protection. He would compete for a starting spot at both guard spots and even if he needs a year to get his body and mind to the level of an NFL o-lineman, I think he will become a stalwart of our future offensive line.
Round 4 Pick 2 Jeremy Sprinkle TE, he is a big long athletic tight end who can block. Most years Sprinkle would not make it to the 4th round, but in this case we get to capitalize on one of the strengths of the draft. With McDonald and Paulson likely being the top 2 tight ends this season, Sprinkle would get the chance develop a more complete game and add some strength for a season or two. He will become a quality in-line tight end down the road.
Round 4 Pick 16 Nathan Peterman QB, this a well-rounded quarterback who played in a pro-style offense at Pitt and handed Clemson their only loss of the season. Arm strength seems to be his biggest flaw, but from what I've seen He has enough arm talent to make all the throws and fit the ball in tight windows. I would say he has Alex Smith level arm strength now and that is something he can build on with an NFL training schedule and some adjustments with footwork/throwing motion. Peterman is a developmental QB with the upside to become a Kirk Cousins type player. We need a third QB and it just makes sense to me to see what he can do.
Round 5 Pick 2 Jamaal Williams RB, I personally think Carlos Hyde is one of the better backs in the league and his struggles with the injurybug are primarily because he has played behind a very bad run-blocking offensive line. That being said, I think Jamaal is a similar type runner to Carlos and would provide a great insurance policy for him. While also taking some of those late game carries in contests that are basically over.
Round 5 Pick 17 Aaron Jones RB, this is the pass-catching skatback that we have all seen excel in Shanahan's offense. Aaron Jones is quick, explosive, and has great hands. He would be a good change of pace to Carlos' punishing style while also giving the team that matchup weapon for passing downs. I think Aaron Jones needs to work on his rout-tree before he can realize his potential, but his athletic comparison is Devonta Freeman and that sounds good to me.
Round 6 Pick 14 Stevie Tu'ikolovatu NT, he is one of those low center of gravity run stuffers. I really know nothing about him beyond reading his draft profile on nfl.com. He seems to have some traits worth taking in a 6th round pick and could hopefully make the team as a developmental nose tackle.
Round 6 Pick 18 Jerry Ugokwe OT, he is a 6'7" 321 lb tackle with 35.375" arms. He seems to have the movement skills to play tackle, but needs some quality coaching if he wants to make an NFL roster. I see him as a practice squad candidate, but who knows maybe he's something special.
Round 7 Pick 1 Tedric Thompson SS, he played well in a very stacked secondary. Has the athleticism to cover some of the power slot guys. Isn't a big hitter for a strong safety, but will make the tackle most of the time. I really don't know if he'll last until the 7th round, if so he could make the team as a special teams player and a reserve safety.
