Today is game day. I go to all of the games and it’s one of the great joys in my life. I’m online plenty and I see the popular sentiment for Levi’s. You’ve heard all of the complaints. Impossible to park, nothing nearby, it’s not in the city of our namesake, it has no personality, it’s hot, it’s open, etc etc. I want to make an appreciation post because I truly enjoy my time here and I think Levi’s is a special place.
I went to the Niners Sofi game this year in week two. It was my first time in that stadium. I was impressed by the building as I approached it. I was impressed as I sat in my seat. It didn’t last. The wrap around screen that is so cool looking never shuts up. Constantly blaring things at you, it’s louder than the crowd (I also think they were piping crowd noise through it at times). It distracts you from the game and the people watching. Because of the roof you don’t have to sit in the sun that’s great right? Was it a nice day that day? I don’t know I couldn’t tell. Was there a flyover? Of course not. All you see is building inside.
Contrast to Levi’s open and minimal style. Instead of the building taking away attention from the game and the surroundings Levi’s does the opposite. You can see the lovely West valley hills. I grew up here these hills are in me. If you walk the outside loop on the upper deck you get views of the South Bay that you can’t get anywhere else. This is my home.
As you can see from the pic I sit in one of the sunny spots. People complain about this the most. Need a roof they say! Then we wouldn’t get these views. We wouldn’t get the flyover where a spy plane snuck up on us. Or the flyover with a refueling plane and two fighter jets, or the flyover with the helicopter and the back open with the guys inside waving at us. Or how about the parachute team from the army landing on the field during salute to service. None of these things are possible in a closed stadium. The south valley has some of the best weather in the world and the stadium embraces that.
I’ll happily sit in the sun. I’ll scream at the players during the intros and make noise during the defense. I’ll shout “Niiiiiinerrrrrs” in the halls and have it returned to me in a lovely chorus of fellow fans. Levi’s is our home. It feels like no other stadium. It has its own culture. I love it and I will see you soon ❤️
