Struggling with Crusader

So as the title says, I’m really struggling to get my Crusader’s build good enough for higher than Normal difficulty. I’m currently level 30, so I realize that I don’t have all my skill points and such, but I thought I’d have enough of a build to start performing better.

So far I’ve been following build advice I found in YouTube from AirsickHydra, going with a bolter crit build. And it’s just...not. What should I really be looking at? I have a couple mind resets at the moment. It might be my fault because I took the defensive options first, so I’m only now really starting to fill out the physical and ranged damage trees.
