Using the AoO detachments/ using the heroic support strat

I'm going into a crusade soon (kinda obvious lol) and I am playing Tau I want to have 2 commanders and If I can I'd rather use 1 CP for the hero support instead of using the multi patrol method. But im not use if you can use heroic support in non AoO detachments. Can I? Can I even use AoO detachments since to my knowledge they can only be used in match play games? Can I use the detachment in narrative ?
