If a Space Marine chapter went renegade against the IOM but still remained vehemently against Chaos, what should they do to survive long term?
I guess the actual best answer would be "Join the T'au", but I feel like that's out of the question for most Space Marines basically by default.
What course of action that doesn't involve being assimilated into another big faction would even be open to them?
As far as I'm aware, no renegade chapter ever actually survived without becoming CSM, so this is just a hypothetical I thought of.
Then it becomes even better. Unless they're chaos-y and that's honestly the least inspired way to commit tech-heresy in the entire setting because it's defacto an admission of utter failure.

This but instead become the mercenaries of a minor forgeworld. A full chapter escorting Tech Adepts on their missions dutifully makes a loooot of problems go away. Tithe your Geneseed to them and have the transfer logged and suddenly you get a lotta leeway because anyone whining at your absence will have to deal with a whole bunch of magi very flustered at their personal army going awol.
Gonna be centuries before the diplomatic kerfuffle resulting from that beard any kind of fruit. You're helping an ally of the imperium. Meaning you don't have time to listen to whatever Terra is babbling about.
Take it up with Mars if you want us to be freed of our oath.
Oh what's that?
Mars is greedily hoovering up whatever crumbs of info our sponsor is sending over?
Well guess that motion isn't passing the house then.
Too bad. 🫡
