When did the Chaos Space Marines figure out about the Gods?

So once the heresy started going at what time did the certain legions start understanding what Gods they were actually following and their names/attributes?

I feel at the beginning they didn't know it was Khorne making them more mad with blood lust but then as time goes on they seem to start understanding who and what he is all about.

Same with the other gods.

So what were big moments of understanding the actual chaos gods and their identities that you remember in the books?

Obviously for Lorgar and his crew it really begins with the travels into the actual warp.
