Meltagun question…

Does lore ever describe what a meltagun looks like when it shoots? I’ve always been curious. Is it like shooting a melty fireball? Consistent Beam? Or just a big bullet?
I think I heard someone once describe it as shooting a microwave at someone. So do you just point it at something and it just melts from heat with no real projectile? This question is killing me!!!
