2WD or 4WD

Is the 4WD worth it? I am planning on getting a used 3rd gen. I would le to go offroad, but do not plan on going into heavy mud, so is 4wd worth it?
Edit: there was a typo. I do not plan on going in heavy mud.
Edit: I live in Florida, so snow isn't an issue
