Upgrading the bed

I have a Wanhao Duplicator i3 v1.?. It’s served me good for the tinkering urge, I have made various modifications and upgrades. But the one that I’m still missing is the bed.
I really want a modern surface to replace the glass plate I use for better first layer adhesion and ability to remove it from the machine to get the print off. Anyone have any experience with what to do and what not to do?
