Am i wrong for thinking i could buy a printer and print this myself for cheaper?

I have an enclosure that i want 3d printed. I am still designing it and there is going to be multiple levels. However, i just wanted to get an idea for what it would cost so i threw the .STL file into some online quote sites and i was getting $400 for even just the basic shell. I was like...excuse me!!!?? I could buy an entire printer and print it myself for less than that. Am i wrong for thinking this?
