Question about storage

I have the original 3DS from 2011, when it was released.
I wanted to get the new Smash update, but I can't download it due to lack of space, no matter how many things I delete.
If I got a new SD card, would I have to transfer everything onto there to get the new update along with all of my old data? If so, how would I do this? Also, how many blocks does the new update take up? Thanks!
