I am a 31F living in California, but grew up in Georgia. I received my DNA results about a year ago. At first, I saw that I was 99% Northern European (not surprising). Then, I saw 0.5% Angolan or Congolese. Intrigued, I researched more to discover that a 5th or 6th great-grandparent had African ancestry. I did some research on ancestry.com and found my 5th great grandmother had “intermarried” and sold property in rural Hancock County, Georgia. I recently researched more and discovered that Hancock, GA had a large population of common law marriages between Black and white individuals. When I told my family that we had African ancestry, a few told me to be quiet because they were most likely enslaved(they said it was shameful). I was surprised to find out that our ancestor could have been in a mutually consensual marriage. Learning so much right now. Has anyone else discovered (recent) African heritage while assuming they were 100% European?
