My experience with Masked Emails in 1Password
Post Body

I've been trying out the Masked Email integration with Fastmail lately, and I decided to get myself a new custom .email domain name to go with it. Since then, I've been working my way through my vault, logging into websites and switching many of them to randomly generated masked emails.

The browser extension is not always reliable for showing the "Create Masked Email..." option. Sometimes, it does, sometimes it doesn't. I'm aware of this bookmarklet, but I've found it equally unreliable.

When it does show up, it seems to be random whether or not it offers to save it to my vault. Ideally, it should pop up the dialog to add new or update an existing item with the generated email address every time. As a workaround, I found that I can use the context menu, select 1Password > Save Login. But I have to remember to do this before I submit the form.

The number of websites that don't allow changing email addresses easily is astonishing. This obviously isn't something that 1Password can fix, but I've found it quite surprising. Sometimes, I have to do it by contacting their support, so I have to find a workaround for generating an email address first. Sometimes I can use the above bookmarklet for this, other times I can do it on their create account page.

Ideally, 1Password app and browser extensions should have a convenient way to generate a masked email address, rather than relying on the extension happening to work on some random email field. Within the app, I should be able to add a masked email to an item just like any other field. I can manually add a plain "email" field, but this doesn't auto-generate the masked email for me.

Some other enhancements that would be useful in the future would be support for blocking or deleting masked email addresses directly within the 1Password UI. I currently have to log into Fastmail and go to the Masked Email settings page for this. I understand supporting this might require some enhancements to the JMAP protocol for masked emails, if Fastmail don't support those abilities already.
