The mechanism on the door releases a loud *hssssssss* as it pops releasing the mechanism that held it closed for all these years. The large gear shaped door lunged inwards and rolled to the left, slowly exposing something I have never seen. Something that everyone here in the vault hasn't seen for generations, the sun... Bright yellow light filtered into the entrance of the vault, my nerves jumping in excitement and fear of the unknown.

"This is it, Tom. This is our chance at survival. Our chance to keep the vault stocked with resources and... um... Populated." The overseer says, his voice trails off at the end, almost embarrassed by the last part. As an overseer he'd really run this place into the ground. Population started declining, so he threw parties to encourage people to reproduce. Unfortunately that just used more resources, forcing the vault to have to ration food. A vicious cycle began, ultimately leading this today. Me leaving the vault in search of resources and bodies.

I was chosen for this task because, out of everyone in this vault, I had the right attitude and I was willing. Willing to get dirty, willing to put myself out there, willing to do anything it took to get that completed. Naive as I may be, I've got the can-do attitude it takes to survive in the post apocalyptic world!
