What methods when purchasing second hand online like FB Marketplace?

I understand not purchasing new batteries from dodgy places. Marketplace is a bit of a hit and miss - you get your mixture of genuine and scammy sellers.
It's not practical to test the capacity but they are like Sony Murata VTC4 and Samsung 20S selling for $2 ($10 retail) usually recovered (so they say) from power tool batteries.
That's just one example but there are a few along similar lines. Is it just not worth it to purchase or are there some tips to not get ripped off?
