So... how fast is a cycle?

Because operations just add up so quickly and programs can easily become massive...
A desktop computer can easily do 2,000,000,000 non-floating-point mathematical operations per SECOND (or, roughly, a 2.0 GHz single-core)- and they're 32 bits. a how long does a cycle take?
