So, in the story I'm writing, I'm trying to make it as close to a realistic "zombie" apocalypse as it can be without it being boring.
Starting off, I feel like clarifying that they run, they're not walkers. That said, I plan on having variations of infected rather than just one generic type. At base, they run, have slightly enhanced physical strength and okay-ish reflexes. One of the types I've been thinking about using would be called a "Hunter," which does exactly what the name states. Once they get wind of a particular survivor, they'll follow that survivor for miles until either it or the survivor is dead, they can't be "escaped." On top of that, they can lead other infected to the survivor as an additional means of killing them.
They're able to do all this because the infected, "zombies," aren't really dead (hence why I used quotation marks), they're more or less taken over by a parasite, and the parasite retains some knowledge of what that particular person use to do and, in some cases, enhances it. I've kinda been wanting to allow the "Hunter" the capability of wielding a knife, hatchet or even a machete.. and the question is what y'all might think about that? 'Cause I've been contemplating whether or not thats overkill.
(Side note: If anyone might have any ideas for an "infected" variation, that would be cool too.)
Some of them maybe can "control" the crowd behavior of zombies using some spores or hormones as signals, creating a sort of "hive mind". If they're not totally stupid as you said, it can make sense one of them can evolve and take the leadership of a small/medium group
