So I'm working on a fantasy novel right now, and I'm having a bit of an issue with conflict.
The government is responsible and benevolent. The aristocrats are humble and generally follow ethics. The masses are hardworking and generally happy. The protagonist's superiors are good mentors and want him to learn.
It's not a perfect society, but there aren't people who are deliverately trying to attack others, so it might end up as that.
The only existentially threateing problem the fictional country has are its external threats, but those actually are beyond the scope of the current story.
I don't really want to use the "evil government, evil royalty oppressing people" or "dark lord" trope, which I feel is pretty overdone, but I'm having a bit of trouble creating drama when everyone is so... agreeable.
Any advice on how to put my character through hell? ;)
