I'm currently unemployed/self-employed/trying to find my "thing" in terms of work, though I'm already in my late 20s (I feel a little late to the "finding myself" party...). I need my job/work to be remote with flexible hours. Right now, I'm trying to freelance on Upwork for admin/writing jobs (with such little luck), trying out e-commerce, and looking at other avenues out there (e.g. graphic design and social media marketing) that I might be interested in getting into. I'm working with an organization to earn a copyediting certificate from UC San Diego Extensions which is what my intention for my "career" is. Now, though, I'm wondering about adding some stuff into the mix to give myself more flexibility for work. I'm looking into developmental editing classes (I have a long background in workshopping creative works). But while I work on those educational goals, I feel my bills and some unnamed anxiety breathing down my neck related to doing something new and marketable now.
That's where content creation comes in! I'd like to try that out and get my feet wet, perhaps freelance it. I think it could be a really good fit for me as well as the other skills I'm developing. I've done some research to learn more and I'm definitely leaning towards the blogging side in terms of type of content (rather than article writing). I'll be learning more about self-publishing in my next course, but for now, that leaves me here, stagnating in that anxiety as I try to figure out what my next move should be. I don't want to create a whole Wordpress website for my writing because a) see the above mentioned "now" b) how the heck do I even do that c) is it even worth it.
My temptation is to push away my procrastination and overthinking, and just log onto Medium and publish a blog post like ripping off a bandaid. Does that make sense? I'm nervous, but I just want to put things online to have a place to show others/employers my work as well as experience what it feels like to connect with others online through writing.
Let me just say that I'm not in this purely for the money because, let's face it, the majority of writers out there aren't shoveling in the cash. But I'm in love with writing and I think content creation would be an awesome way to incorporate something I love to do with something I need to do anyway.
Please give me ANY (kind) tips, hints, directions on what to do/where to turn next. I'm all ears!!
Love,
broke girl who likes to write
****Edit:
Ok, my comment about making lots of money from writing a book seems to have angered people. Not my intention at all, so I'm sorry about that. I thought "write a book" was more of someone joking with me and I was trying to be self deprecatingly humorous back. I'm a little cynical when it comes to creative writing being a full-time job that pays the bills consistently; it's what I was taught. I'm trying to build financial security by widening my skillset and marketability. I'm in a lot of debt and can't really pay the rent like someone suggest, so I'm trying to side hustle/remote work/freelance my way to a good place.
I went school for creative writing and the running joke was that we were getting a degree in something that wasn't a "graduate and get a job" kind of thing. Essentially, we were paying to be released into the world confused about what comes next. That was my experience at least. I don't regret it though because I love writing and I'm lucky I got to learn so much about it at school. So there's that.
On writing a book: I'd love to write a book; I've thought about it often, especially in the self publishing route (I'm a romance book junkie and I think it would be a blast to write one). I just am looking for other writing outlets right now that might be interesting to try out and could help me find something work-wise that I don't despise. If I had my dream scenario, I'd write posts and create conversations in comments or other places to create a supportive, thoughtful, connected community. That was my intention for this post........
