Question about squats

Hey r/workout. I recently got started working out because I want to join the army, but whenever I do squats with a dumbell, my wrists start hurting a lot after 4-5 squats. I can barely do more then 10 before I need to stop and put the dumbell down.
The Fitness test for the army requires that I be able to lift a 20 kg sandbag 30 times in 3 mins and 30 seconds. Iโd love to be able to do this at the gym but I just canโt with the pain.
Any tips or tricks to help?
