In need of a reliable daily commuter in NJ

I have always worked in NYC so I commuted daily bus/train and kept my bmw 528 in my lot. It’s starting to go it’s 103xxx miles, I don’t want to put any more money into this. I’m now working in NJ and driving daily, 65 miles a day.

I’m 30 with no children so I’m looking for something fun to drive as well as reliable and will hold its value best over the years, preferably with cheap repairs.

Probably looking for a car with decent clearance and AWD because of unexpected snow up here.

My budget to purchase is $40k or less used but also open to leasing but I’ll prob hit my mileage before the lease is up.

Any recommendations?
