I didn't think it was unpopular, but the more I talk about it around me, the more I realize that there are very few people who share the same opinion or understand my point of view.
I think it probably comes from the fact that being a minority, the constant cultural appropriation and racism that exists with regard to my people has meant that I have very little interest in Korean culture or SKR in general.
Every time, people tell me that I have to take a minimum interest in the culture since it's an integral part of Kpop and not appreciating the culture means I don’t appreciate my favs background and my answer is: how?
In fact, I think a lot of fans are just kidding themselves. They feel obliged to love culture out of respect for their favs, but regardless of what they say about Knetz or other groups who are not their favs, you can tell the only thing they love about SKR is their idols.
TLDR; sometimes Westerners judge other counties by the Western standards of their own country, but it just doesn’t work like that.
Thank you! I feel like Westerners who are into Kpop have a very shallow understanding of SK & Asia in general based on Kpop. They tout their high ground in issues of cultural appropriation & racism without understanding the cultural context. If you're not interested in SK & its history & culture, then don't make blatant statements about the country & its people. AND if you claim to have an interest in a country, explore it from all sides & from various perspectives, NOT just your Western lens. I'm looking at Americans specifically who have broken apart a country for their petty capitalist politics, and then turn their nose up at SK when issues like cultural appropriation, homophobia & racism occur (May I also say that the WEST brought homophobia to a lot of Asian countries due to the introduction of Christianity).
I love your response. Unfortunately, from this whole thread, it seems as if people do generalize SK based on Kpop and the issues in the Kpop industry, which is super unfortunate. Korea isn’t just plastic surgery, beauty standards & racism lmao, but oh well. As an Asian, I really hoped the increasing interest in Kpop and Asian culture would reduce stereotypes and build a deeper understanding of the diverse cultural nuances of Asia and the countries in it, but it’s clearly not the case.
I do agree to a degree, but without at least a slightly deeper understanding of SK, doesn't just consuming Kpop lead to the formation of inaccurate & positively toxic stereotypes about SK? Just as consuming pop, black-influenced music may lead some people (who are not familiar with US culture) to come up with certain stereotypes, due to the popularity of topics such as drugs & sex.
Again, that's the surface of Korea & Asia in general from a Western perspective. Colorism, beauty standards exist in every country all around the world.

Say it louder for the Americans in the back! No one is forcing you to like Kpop SO PLEASE leave your western mindset out of it.
