Advice on Transferring into Computer Science
Post Body

Hello,

I'm a student at a community college (Clark College in Washington) and I want to apply to the UW computer science program next fall. I'm looking for some advice on how feasible this is for me and what I should do for the next year to improve my chances of getting in.

My first question is how I should salvage my GPA:

My GPA right now is 3.480. This is because I procrastinated a lot and did pretty terribly my first year at Clark College, but the second year I got a 4.0. My bad GPA is due mostly to two history classes that I can retake and bring my GPA up to 3.78. I've gotten a 4.0 in every math and science class I've taken at Clark, and I think I can continue to do so.

If I continue to get 4.0's in my stem classes, will UW care that much about the two history classes I flunked a few years ago? Depending on the answer to that question, I can either retake those history classes (10 credits) to boost my GPA, or I can just concentrate on taking more CSE and math classes. Here is what those options would look like by the time I apply:

- 3.701 GPA, where my last 90 credits is 4.0 and my last 45 credits are all math/computer science classes, or

- 3.84 GPA that is exactly the same except I took 10 credits of history instead of some stem classes.

The reason I would have a 3.84 and not a 4.0 is because I flunked English 101 during my first year and I can't retake it. So besides that one English class from a few years ago, I would have 4.0's all across the board.

I also have some questions about extracurriculars:

I'm in the aerospace club at my college, where we are building a drone for a competition. This seems like it will be good for my application. I'm also a math and computer science tutor. I know tutoring will also be good for my application, but I don't know if I have enough time to do both tutoring and to do well on the drone team. So my questions is whether I can get by just with being on the drone team, or if I need to do both, or if I need to drop tutoring and do another extracurricular that is more relevant to computer science, such as a personal project or an internship or volunteering somewhere.

And my final question: How feasible it is for me to get into the comp sci program? I also won a first place writing award for an essay, in case that's relevant.

I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.
