Dream - Jan 31
Post Body

(Some embellishments / inaccuracies, as with all dream recounts of mine)

Some friends and I are in an antique, gothic style mansion that's been worn down considerably. Apparently we're dead. A decrepit man, balding and hunched over, is seated on a backless bench going nowhere fast, staring off in the distance.

In room(s) farther in the mansion, there are some very loud noises. Crunching, clanging, booming, screaming, all of it. We ask the man what we're doing here. He says that he can't muster the will the move forward anymore, which is somewhat ambiguous. We question him a little more to discover that the mansion is actually a series of trials designed for the newly dead to wander "home". You get a number of "tries" to go through the house, and if you use them up you will be voided, existence completely gone, a state of nothingness, a truly dead afterlife.

He's a bit of a sad looking bloke and one of my friends offers to carry his soul home, provided he spot us the rest of his lives. He takes out a bag of little tokens and hands them to us, as well as a larger looking stone, an encasing that I guess is supposed to be his physical manifestation of a soul.

There's only 6 tokens and 4 of us. We decide to give me and another person an extra, and venture towards to rooms with the noises.

The first room seems to be a series of physical traps, lots of blades and sharp pointy objects being flung around the room at random and at timed intervals. Some spike pits as well. We muster ourselves and plan out a route to take to a door on the opposite side and go one at a time. Since we have extra tokens our friends insist we go first. The other friend makes it on the first try, but during my attempt I blunder and feel cold steel cleave my body in two at chest level. I black out shortly after hearing a lot of screaming.

It seems to take a long time before I wake up again. I'm in a bedroom in an unknown place, though later find out it's connected to the hall where our friends and I first saw each other in the mansion. The man on the bench isn't there anymore. I still remember our conversations about going 'home' and the tokens.

I make my way to the room, but I don't see my friends there anymore. I turn back and search the rest of the mansion but do not find anyone. I wonder how long I was out. I head back to the room and take a look to see I have 3 more tokens. One of the tokens that was there originally seems to have disappeared. Although anxious, I try again and manage to get the room done in one piece.

I try the door on the opposite side of the room but it doesn't budge. I wonder if I've made some sort of mistake. Push, pull, kicking, ramming, no matter what I do to it it seems I can't get the door to open. I logic out that there's a keyhole on the door and I must have missed a key on the way here.

I try to make my way back using the same route through the room but I made a miscalculation because the reverse route isn't quite the same with the traps. Some spikes on the ground shoot up to impale one of my legs and I'm immobilized. I am screaming in pain as the spikes retract out, leaving a sizeable bleeding hole near the back calf of my left leg. I end up being able to crawl back the rest of the way, narrowly avoiding a passage that needed a bit of speed to pass by hurdling myself towards the entrance door. But due to bleed out I pass out, before waking up irl.
