What is the role of demo in HL?

I come from a 6's background (mostly watching, some playing) so i know the demo is the primary role is putting out damage so the scouts can clean up which in turn lets the roamer roam from my basic understanding but with HL having all 9 classes it gets kinda murky as to what's demos role in HL
