Hello, now I understand that this post is wordy, but trust me, if you truly want to understand how bad the legal bud market has gotten, stick around and read on because it's worse than you probably assume.
So THC percentage, you've seen it on the jars and the bags and you've probably wondered "How accurate are the numbers on those packages?". Truth is, wildly inaccurate. Most of us have probably figured out that most dispensaries do not send samples of their product out for testing, so where is the number coming from? well, often it comes from the blind leading the blind. Someone reporting a number because a search engine and nothing more told it. according to this peer reviewed journal in which researchers took 23 marijuana samples from 10 different dispensaries, the THC percentage of the bud itself fluctuated between 10% and 18%, however, the advertised percent oftentimes was way higher than that, reporting a THC percentage of 15% - 33%. On average, the percentage was ~ 5% to 10% off from the reported potency
I'd like to add this quote here for the people who have decided not to dive into the journal. "Our results demonstrate that there are substantial, statistically significant differences between THC % by dry weight (hereafter THC potency) reported on consumer labels and our observed test results (Table 1, Figs 1 and 2). On average, observed THC potency was 23.1% lower than the lowest label reported values and 35.6% lower than the highest label reported values, with a maximum percentage change of -56.5%. Furthermore, 13 of 23 tested samples (~57%) had observed values that were more than 30% lower than the lowest reported value, while only seven samples (~30%) were within 15% of the lowest reported THC potency. Dispensaries with two or more samples had at least one sample where the observed THC potency was more than 34% lower than the lowest label reported value (Table 1)." I implore you to and look at the figures, figure 2 is the most damning in my opinion
I understand many will not have read this far, that is ok, I just want someone to know the results and know how bad it actually is.
They also do averages of testing with multiple plants of the same genetics (which will still vary esp if they grow hybrids) taking the top colas with the most exposure to light to test. That's like a butcher cutting a ribeye out of a cow and claiming every other piece of the cow is a ribeye as well. It just isn't possible.
