Experiments with Powdered Peanut Butter
Post Body

Found some powdered peanut butter (like this) in the clearance isle of my grocery store so I decided to see what I could do with it for backpacking. It's light and packs a pretty good calorie/nutrition count for it's weight. Most of the other powdered peanuts I've seen also contain added sugar.

Things I've done with it:

  • Mixed a few teaspoons with water to make a flavored drink. It's not bad and ensures I have some calorie intake through out the day. It would help mask the taste or iodine purified water or other off tastes. When I hiked the AT people often used kool aid packets, gatorade packets, or other flavoring packets for the same purpose.

  • Mixed with a little water and used as a spread on crackers or flat bread for a sandwich. Smear on apples as a snack. Tastes like natural peanut butter. Add a little more salt and some honey and you have a good sandwich.

  • Thin it out with some water and use as a base for a thai style peanut dressing on either sandwiches or noodles. Sandwich was shredded cabbage and carrots, packet chicken, and some raisins eaten on flatbread. Noodles was a typical quick stirfry of rehydrated vegetables. All in all both were pretty good meals.

  • Oatmeal additive. I don't like oatmeal but sometimes you need a quick breakfast that will last you a while. Just stir some powdered peanut butter in, add whatever else you like, and it gives it a flavor and calorie boost.

That's everything I've tried with it so far. All in all I'm happy with my experiments but would be interested to hear if you guys have any other ideas for it?
