I'm a borderline Silver/Gold player (lost my promos 2/3 on the final day of S11). One of the major issues I have in top is understanding when it's optimal to try to freeze the lane and when it's optimal to play in the enemy's face.
To my understanding the math works like this:
- If you feel you're so weak you shouldn't face the enemy in the open, freeze.
- If you feel you're so strong that the enemy walking up to farm is a death sentence for them, Freeze.
- If the enemy jungle is a roaming death machine, Freeze.
- If the enemy wave clear is too strong to ever freeze and they aren't too strong, shove them into tower.
- If you have superior poke and aren't afraid if an all in, shove them into tower.
I'm concerned though that my math or knowledge might be off or there is some scenario I'm missing. Because often times when I try to freeze it just seems to ensure a snowball for the enemy. Meanwhile, even on champs I see other players hard shove well with, like Teemo, I find myself constantly doing better at freezing then shoving to tower.
So this is a question to other top laners. What are the benefits of hard shoving into tower, how do I do it safely, and how do I know when it's better?
