I read this book in the early 2000's, but I'm fairly sure it had been out for a few years by then.
The main character was the youngest son of a pastor who had recently taken up a posting at a largeish church in Pasadena, California. It's told from the perspective of the son of the deacons at the church, I think?
It was very, very funny, and reminded me a lot of the Great Brain books in some parts, but it was most definitely not a children's book. It was very dark at times. I don't remember whether or not it was an overtly religious book, but there were a lot of religious themes in it, obviously.
The two little boys were always getting into some mischief. For example, they poked holes in the pastor's waders to embarrass him during a baptism, I believe.
There was a lot about the boys' love for Edsels, and a lot about how ugly those cars were. There was a scene where they were watching the Rose Parade and I think the mayor rode an Edsel and they were really excited.
The main character had a gorgeous singing voice but didn't like to sing, I think?
I vaguely remember that they also tried to accuse a junior pastor(?) of inappropriate conduct with teenage girls.
The main character died of something horrible, I think cancer? The book went on for a bit after that and there was a scene where they wiped away all his makeup before the funeral because he didn't look like himself that way.
I'm really hoping to find this book. I first read it with my dad years ago, and I really enjoyed it. Thank you!
