Hybrid graphics support on linux

Post Body

I'm looking for a new notebook and was planning to get a 15 inch Thinkpad, however, it's very hard to find a model in my country without a discrete gpu. This is something I would rather avoid since I'm using Linux and also use external monitors. I also found that on the P1 all the external screen ports are hardwired to the discrete gpu, which means that the nvidia gpu cannot be disabled entirely. Is this also the case for other Thinkpads like the T15 or P15? Is it also the case for other comparable laptops, like the XPS15 or Zbook Studio?

Did someone manage to make this work in some reasonable way? I've seen that it's possible to switch between hybrid and discrete graphics, but it requires restarting the X server, which is really not an ideal solution to me and using discrete graphics only is not very good option either since then battery life will suck.
