Experiencing an intermittent motherboard failure on memory slot A1 and PCIE-A. Have tried to change memory and it still intermittently fails locking up the entire server. We are running only 2 VM's on the server, primary and backup for another server.
We currently have 2 E5-2430L processors in the server (2.4Ghz - 8 cores) 128Gb RAM, and three disk arrays, internal on a Perc H730 and large disks on and external Perc H810e
array 1 - qty. 2- 800GB SSD mirrored array for boot,
array 2 - qty. 6-6GB SAS drives Raid 1 fast cache
array 3 - qty. 8-10GB SAS drives raid-5
and a couple of USB 3 drives for removeable backups
I bought a new refurbished server R730XD same chassis but 256Gb Ram and processors are
2x INTEL XEON E5-2680V4 2.40GHZ 35MB 14-CORE 120W
all other cards are the same. H730 and H810
Other than the licensing issue of 16 cores vs 28 which i will ask about later, my lead tech has advised me that we only need to move the drives to the new chassis (same drive spots) and the Perc's will read the config data off the inserted drives , ask if we want to reconfigure the raid cards at next reboot, we acknowledge it with a yes, the server will the reboot, and boot into the same configuration as on the previous server. same ethernet ports, same IP's etc. and life will move along smoothly.
Q1: is his assertion of what we need to do accurate? I have never know anything to be done to a Microsoft installation that is simple like that? I am assuming that most of the reconfigure is done by the dell server before boot so Microsoft has nothing to do with this process. Am i missing something in the big picture here?
Q2: will the server boot in a deprecated mode due to the licensing until i can order core processor license upgrades (which may not even be needed but might be nice to have? The customer has a worldwide site license so getting the upgrades is just a procedural and budgetary issue and just takes some time to get.
Am i missing something i didn't ask?
thanks for your thoughts and assistance in advance.
